Addiction Issues

Addiction

The world view of Addiction is a compulsive physiological need for and use of a habit-forming substance. It is accepted as a mental illness in the diagnostic nomenclature and results in substantial health, social and economic problems. Human beings have the fundamental need for Control, Safety, and Connection. When these needs are not met in childhood or while growing up, people take refuge in all sorts of substances to fill that emptiness within. Addiction to me is nothing but the filling of a hole or void with a substance be it cigarette, alcohol, marijuana, etc. It is interesting to observe that humans subconsciously choose to suffer from addiction despite very well being aware of the fact that it is detrimental to their own health and well-being.  No other living being on this planet does something to harm its own survival except, We The Humans. People judge addicts as someone with a lack of or no will or self-control. What I want to bring out in the open is it is not a matter of will or self-control. Addiction is merely a symptom or the effect of the trauma or disconnection faced in early childhood or repeating the fate of a certain ancestor.

Every time we choose to pick up a Cigarette
We choose Death over Life
Nicotine filled smoke
Over fresh air
Disheartened at not being able to find Safety
In this 70 inch, the human body
We seek Safety
In these 5 inches of Cigarette
We don’t know when life will end
But we know when our cigarettes will
We could not connect to Life
At least let us connect to Death
We die And become the cigarette
Lighting it is merely a death rite
Filling the lungs with smoke
Blurring our vision to reality
After the cigarette is fully burned
Akin to converting the body to ashes
We roam like a disembodied spirit
Completely disconnected from own selves
